I'm an Independent who likes a leader to be a pragmatic, brilliant over-achiever. I simply cannot vote for someone who graduated bottom of his class. Unlike some people who equate an educated person as "elitist" as though to be taken as an affront, I simply scoff at the idea as foolish and irresponsible. How many parents will actually promote this thinking to their child? Be a failure, don't work hard, you don't need an education...I mean, how many high school students would jump at the idea of attending Harvard or Princeton? My parents would disown me if I came home with failing grades. My Mother had an elementary education and my Father, a high school diploma. They spoke three foreign languages plus English, came from a third world country, and yet was able to make a living without relying on welfare, assimilate into the American culture, and made a lot of sacrifices to put me through school. They pushed me to be the best, to work hard to get top grades, and yet were respectful enough to allow me to choose my career, even though it was not an ideal or practical one in their minds. But they knew that I was stubborn, determined, and willing to work for what I wanted no matter what I chose to do.
I found the Obamas to be a fascinating couple. They came from humble beginnings and fought for their place in this country. They are wonderfully aware of the importance of a good education and the opportunities that come with it. I truly believe education is the key to success. And they are a shiny example of it.
